Verse 10: Then God came and stood before him exactly as before, calling out, “Samuel! Samuel!”
Samuel answered, “Speak. I’m your servant, ready to listen.”
Every day in your home town, God is calling out the name of someone, just as God did long ago for Samuel. Like Samuel, they may hear God’s voice “before the revelation of God had been given … personally.” They may not recognize that voice saying their name and stirring their heart about the pain they are witnessing in the community. They may not realize that they have been given beautiful and abundant gifts that are just what people need.
Samuel was blessed to have Eli, who finally awakened to the reality that it was God who kept waking Samuel up. Eli didn’t take over for Samuel, or try to grab the voice for himself. Rather, he told Samuel how to start the conversation with God. That was Eli’s role.
What is your role in helping the people in your community recognize that voice calling their name? Who is that God wants you to help start the conversation? The prevenient grace of God is preparing them for something great, something amazing, something holy, something beautiful. You’ll only get to witness that beauty if you invest some time listening for the echo of God calling their name.
